According to US experts, El Niño, the natural Pacific weather phenomenon that raises global temperatures, has officially started. The tropical Pacific is currently experiencing El Niño conditions, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with sea surface temperatures having increased significantly in recent months.

According to some predictions, this might become a “super” El Niño and possibly one of the strongest ever. It might result in another record-hot year, most likely in 2027, with disruptions to the weather, food supplies, and economies lasting long beyond that year, adding to decades of heat brought on by human activity.

After the cooler “sister” phenomenon, La Niña, terminated earlier this year, forecasters anticipated this warming phase, thus this NOAA news is not shocking. The 0.5 °C-above-average threshold that US scientists use to identify an El Niño event has now been exceeded by sea surface temperatures in the central and tropical Pacific.Over the previous month, El Niño conditions have emerged, as evidenced by above-average sea surface temperatures (SSTs) throughout the central to eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean,” the agency said.
