The US military claimed Monday that it carried out “self-defense” strikes in southern Iran, including on missile launch sites and boats carrying mines, despite President Donald Trump’s claim on social media that discussions were “going well.”

According to a statement from the US Central Command, the strikes were carried out “to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces”. The targets included missile launch locations and Iranian boats attempting to deploy mines. “U.S. Central Command continues to defend our forces while exercising restraint during the ongoing ceasefire,” CENTCOM spokesman Timothy Hawkins said in a statement.

Additional information was not immediately accessible, including more specifics on Iran’s threats and what this means for continuing negotiations. The strikes coincide with a potential deal between both sides to end the war, allowing for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively blocked by Iran since the start of the US-Israeli war on Tehran on February 28.
