After nearly 40 years of a brutal Karabakh conflict, Turkish and Armenian leaders Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev signed a peace deal Friday in Washington, D.C., in front of US President Donald Trump. Today, we are bringing peace to the South Caucasus,” stated President Aliyev of Azerbaijan. “Today we writing a great new history.”

Additionally, Armenian Premier Pashinyan stated that this accord marked the beginning of a new era of peace. “(We are) laying foundations to a better story that the one we had in the past,” he continued. Trump added, “The nations of Armenia and Azerbaijan are committing to ending all fighting forever,” during a joint news conference with the two politicians.

Following an intense military battle in September 2023, Azerbaijan regained complete control of the Karabakh territory, and Baku and Yerevan have been working on normalizing their relations for the last year.

Pashinyan, Aliyev, and Trump were all present at the signing ceremony on Friday, but the erstwhile rivals were only able to patch things up after Washington and Moscow were removed from the equation. However, the peace deal will be advantageous to the US, not Russia.
