As part of a broader reconsideration spurred by Russia’s war in Ukraine, Sweden’s government announced on Tuesday that it would proceed with a plan to establish a new espionage agency that would target foreign threats.

Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard said at a news conference that the new organization would be named Sweden’s Foreign Intelligence Service (UND) and would begin operations in January 2027.Stenergard stated that the new service would be similar to the UK’s MI6. “It has become very clear during the ongoing war in Ukraine that an information advantage and the ability to rapidly and continuously adapt various technical systems are just as crucial as advanced weapons systems.”

In addition to the non-military Swedish Security Service (SAPO), which concentrates on domestic threats, Sweden already has a military intelligence agency, the Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST), which is in charge of foreign threats.

According to Stenergard, the new service would assume part of MUST’s duties and collaborate closely with SAPO, the Swedish Armed Forces, and the National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA), which is responsible for signal intelligence.
