On Thursday, the UK government upped the country’s official threat level from substantial to severe, following the stabbing of two Jewish men in north London the day before, which police are calling a terrorist incident.
Severe is the second highest rung on a five-point scale, indicating that intelligence agencies believe an attack is highly possible over the next six months. Officials in Westminster declared an antisemitism emergency and promised to beef up security for Jewish communities following a series of attacks that provoked fear and fury among Jews.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that his administration “will do everything in our power to stamp this hatred out” after two Jewish men, ages 34 and 76, were seriously injured in a stabbing in Golders Green, a north London neighborhood that is the epicenter of Britain’s Jewish community.
However, other members of the community blamed the government for failing to combat antisemitism. When Starmer visited Golders Green on Thursday, he was heckled by roughly 100 protesters holding posters reading “Keir Starmer, Jew Harmer”.
